Contrary to our previous post, a last minute decision by Rihanna’s record company sees her releasing ‘Rockstar 101’ as the next single from her album ‘Rated R’.
The ‘Umbrella’ singer was set to perform ‘Te Amo’ on American Idol last night, but then confusion right up until the last minute actually resulted in ‘Rockstar 101’ being performed.
Idol host, Ryan Seacrest confirmed the song will be released as the follow up single to hugely successful ‘Rude Boy’.
The song itself, is personally potentially my favourite from the entire album. Air guitars will be brought out in clubs all over the world when this comes on, thanks to the song featuring guitar from legendary performer Slash (who, by the way, has a new solo debut album out this month). Listen to the studio version here (I’d strongly recommend doing this first), or watch the Barbadian princess ‘rocking’ out to it live on American Idol from last night below.
The problem is, in the context of ‘Rated R’, a dark album, the song fits in perfectly as part of the chilling storyline. As a standalone single, I’m not sure it will reach out to the millions of fans in the same way ‘Umbrella’ or ‘Disturbia’ managed to.
She isn’t the best live singer really is she? At least she always sings live I suppose…
